A police dog has saved the life of a woman, who had lost herself in the city of Espoo (near Helsinki).

According to the West-Uusimaa Police Department, on Tuesday 3 December they received an emergency report about a woman who was missing in Espoo.

Police said the victim was known to be "in very bad condition" and the weather was freezing, so the search started immediately with several police patrols helped by the dog, named Leevi.

Less than an hour after the emergency report, the dog found the missing woman about two kilometers away from her home. At the time she was found, "she was barely conscious", police said. She was later referred to Jorvi Hospital (Espoo) for further treatment.

"At the time of the search it was dark and -4 degrees. The woman was hiding in the forest, which made the task very challenging. A police dog is a very good helper in such tasks, and without Leevi's help, it would have been difficult to find her," explained Mikko Rytkönen, from the Western Uusimaa Police.

Trained dogs are a great resource when it comes to finding missing people. This is not the first time this year that they help to resolve a disappearance.
