During January-November, 42,015 children were born in Finland, which is 2,008 fewer than in the corresponding period in 2018. Again, the number of deaths exceeded that of births: 48,961 people died during these eleven months, which is 762 lower than one year earlier. The number of births was 6,946 lower than that of deaths.

These numbers are part of the latest preliminary figures on population released by Statistics Finland.

Despite the dramatic lack of births, the country´s population increased by 9,486 persons during January-November. The reason for the increase was migration gain from abroad, since immigration exceeded emigration by 16,779.

Immigration in November

According to the preliminary statistics for November, 30,379 persons immigrated to Finland from abroad and 13,600 persons emigrated from Finland. The number of immigrants was 1,390 higher and the number of emigrants 4,321 lower than in the corresponding period of the previous year.

In all, 8,053 of the immigrants and 9,301 of the emigrants were Finnish citizens.

According to the preliminary data, the number of inter-municipal migrations totaled 264,320 during January-November. Compared with the corresponding period in 2018, the decrease was 1,891 migrations according to the municipal division of 2019.

Finland´s population totaled 5,527,405 people at the end of November.
