Finland's total emissions of greenhouse gases in 2019 corresponded with 52.8 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2), according to preliminary data from Statistics Finland. This is 3.6 million tonnes of CO2 (or 6%) less compared to the previous year and 38% less than in 2003, when emissions were at their highest.

The fall in emissions was most influenced by the decreased use of coal and peat. Emissions not included in the EU Emissions Trading System fell by 2% but exceeded the annual emission allocations set by the EU by 0.2 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent.

Emissions-transport-Energy

Emissions from energy and transport sectors by municipality (1,000 t eq).

In the energy sector, emissions fell by 8% (3.3 tonnes of CO2) and the emissions from industrial processes and product use by 5% (0.3 million tonnes of CO2). This fall was most affected by the decreased consumption of coal and peat.

Emissions-Waste-Agriculture

Emissions from waste and agriculture by municipality (1,000 t eq).

Emissions from agriculture grew by 1% (0.1 million tonnes.) and emissions in the waste sector fell by 5% (0.1 million tonnes) from 2018 to 2019.
