A famed Danish recording studio used by the likes of Elton John, George Michael and Depeche Mode, among others, has been ravaged by fire, police said on Monday.

The PUK Recording Studios complex is located in Gjerlev, north of the city of Randers, in western Denmark.

The studio was built in 1978 in a converted farmhouse by John "Puk" Quist, and in the mid-1980s was considered one of the most advanced in the world, attracting big names including Gary Moore and Judas Priest.

Quist sold the studio - also used by Danish acts like Kashmir and Volbeat - in 1992, and it has not been in use for several years.

Police and emergency services told local media outlets that the building was ablaze when they arrived at the scene early Monday.

It was not known what caused the fire, and there were no reports of any people being injured.
