A woman and two men were seriously injured in a shooting in a small town in southern Sweden on Tuesday, according to police.

They were found injured at different locations near the crime scene after being hit by gunshots, the Swedish police said.

Three men were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder in the evening. They were three teenage minors, according to Expressen newspaper.

Those injured were being treated in hospital. They were a woman aged between 60 and 70, and two men aged between 20 and 40, according to a statement provided by Scania province.

Several people told the police they had heard shots in Nasby, an area in the city of Kristianstad, around 100 kilometres from Malmo, during the afternoon.

Circumstances still unclear

The circumstances of the incident remain unclear. Police said there had also been gunfire in the city on Monday evening.

There has been an increase in deliberate explosions and gun violence in Sweden in recent years.

The rise is usually attributed to rival gangs, particularly in larger cities such as Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmo.
