Minister of Foreign Affairs Pekka Haavisto (from Vihreät, the Green League) is currently the favourite candidate of the Finns to be the next President of the Republic.

According to a survey commissioned by the magazine Suomen Kuvalehti, 45% of Finns would consider voting for Haavisto in the next presidential election, which will be held in 2024.

The sampling was conducted on 3-4 February 2020 and participants were allowed to select as many names as they wanted from a list of 26 possible candidates.

Sanna Marin in third place

Pekka Haavisto was the one who received the most support and number two was the Governor of the Bank of Finland Olli Rehn (from Keskusta, the Centre Party), who was selected by 35% of the respondents.

Prime Minister Sanna Marin (from SDP, the Social Democratic Party) ranked in third place, mentioned by 28% of the participants.

The True Finns

Behind those three most marked candidates were the EU-Commissioner Jutta Urpilainen (26%), the Member of the Parliament Ville Niinistö (25%) and the Parliament Speaker Matti Vanhanen (25%).

The chairman of the True Finns, Jussi Halla-Aho, was selected by 19% of the respondents.
