Finnish health authorities reported Wednesday 293 new coronavirus infections and 2 deaths recorded in the past 24 hours.

According to the data released by the National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL), the 2 fatalities occurred in the Helsinki and Tampere hospital catchment areas.

With this increase, the total number of infected people in Finland since the start of the pandemic climbs to 16,930.

To date, the Nordic country has reported 361 deaths associated with the Covid-19 disease. There have been 7 deaths during the last week.

The vast majority (over 95%) of the deceased had one or more long-term illnesses.

The epidemic has not increased total mortality in Finland. Deaths of working-age people are very rare, and no deaths of children and young people have occurred, according to THL.

Less people in hospital care

The number of people hospitalized for coronavirus decreased by 5 compared to the previous report, to 65. And the number of patients in intensive care is currently 15, which is 2 less than 48 hours earlier.

The largest number of new cases have been recorded in the hospital districts of Helsinki and Uusimaa, Southwest Finland, North Ostrobothnia, Pirkanmaa, Vaasa, Kymenlaakso, Central Finland, North Savo, Kanta-Häme and Lapland, THL says.

Incidence of new cases

According to THL, during the most recent fourteen-day monitoring period (19 October – 1 November) 2,658 new cases were diagnosed. The incidence of new cases in relation to the population was 48 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in this period.

But according to the latest updates by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), which monitors the development of the epidemic across Europe, currently the incidence of new cases in Finland is 50.5 new cases per 100,000 residents.

An estimated 12,700 people in Finland have already recovered from the disease, which is about 75% of reported cases, THL says.
